Mukutmanipur - Now thats what I call nature

Mukutmanipur is located around a dam in the district of Bankura. The dam harnesses the waters of the Kangsabati and Kumari rivers.Attractions The dam itself is worth visiting. It is 10,098 m. long and 38 m. high. The gently lapping lake, covering an area of 86 sq. km., offers a grand view of the sunset. The lake nestles amidst the surrounding greenery and provides boating facilities to the visitors.A walk from Mukutmanipur leads one to the confluence of the Kangsabati and Kumari rivers. Nearby is the Pareshnath Hill. A number of stone images are to be found on top of the hill. Among these are the Jain God, Parswanath Swami, made of chlorite stone, and the Hindu God, Shiva. The green island of Banpukuria Mrigadab is a must for tourists. The island is full of mahua, kendu and palash trees. A boat trip to and from Mukutmanipur takes around four hours.Another important landmark near Mukutmanipur is Ambikanagar, an ancient centre of Jain culture. By Train:

Mukutmanipur is well connected by road. Take the Durgapur Express Way, reach Durgapur via Burdwan. From Durgapur take the route to Bankura through Barjora and reach Khatra which is 10 kms. away from Mukutmanipur.

2. Jhily Mili, distance forty five kms., driving time forty five mins.
3. Eco Park, distance sixty kms., driving time one hr. fifteen mins.
4. Susunia Hills, distance seventy six kms., driving time one hr. forty five mins.
5. Bishnupur, distance eighty five kms., driving time one hr. fifty mins.
6. A open-air temple on Parshwanath Tila, distance four kms., driving time thirty mins.
7. Ambikanagar and Ambikanangar temple, distance four kms., driving time thirty mins.


Ranibandh & Jhilimili Forest is only 35 km away from Sonajhuri Nature Resort. For experiencing the panoramic view of deciduous sal forests, the watch tower of Sutan (45 km) will perhaps be the right place. Batches of Spotted Deer have been released in the wilderness of this area where these beautiful animals have survived and proliferated. Herds of wild elephant come down seasonally from Dalma hills of Jharkhand and raid the crop of nearby tribal villages. Talberia dam, on way to Jhilimili will freshen up tourists who are driving for a long time. The real nature lovers may stay back a few minutes more for watching the water insects in the dam. There is a Deer Park, known as Bonpukuria Deer Park just opposite to the Kangsaboti Dam, which is just a pleasant boat ride away. The ruins of the fort of Raja Kalachand is nearby. The Raja committed suicide after failing to clear the dues to British Government under permanent settlement. Bishnupur only 65 km away from Sonajhuri is another place where every tourist would love to go. It flourished as the capital of the "Mallas" dynasty till early 19th century. Exquisite craftsmanship of Terracotta artisans is evident in the terracotta temples of Bishnupur. The place is famous for Silk Tasar, Baluchari Sari, Bellmetalware, Conchshell jwellery and potrery, mainly the famous Bankura Horse. The museum at Jogesh Chandra Prakriti Bhavan holds a good collection of locally procured antiques and art objects. Snake festival in August, Bishnupur fair in December add varieties and colours for the tourists. Susunia (75 km) & Biharinath (90 km) are another two places of interest not very far from Mukutmanipur. Susunia hill, 439.5 mt situated to the North of Gandheswai river is an important stone age archaeological site of Bankura district. A trek through forests of Susunia hill will bring you near to the 4th century cave where inscriptions of Pushkaranadhipa Maharaja Sri Chdravarman will be found.
